North American Nursing Diagnosis Association-International, Inc.

The North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) officially began in 1978 although it was 1982 before they were formally organized. In 2002 the name was changed to NANDA International and in 2011 became NANDA International, Inc. It began with a conference in 1978 which was organized by Kristin Gebbie and Mary Ann Lavin to nurse practitioners at St. Louis University Hospital. Pressured to explain how their care differed from primary care physicians and to allow entry of nursing into the electronic health record they organize this conference which was held in October of that year in St. Louis.

Their aim was to develop a system for classifying patient health problems  that could be used by nurse practitioners to bill for their services as well as distinguish nursing care from medical care. As is detailed in a dissertation by Jennifer Hobbs  (see  http://gradworks.umi.com/33/28/3328695.html) they lost control in the ensuing years to nurse theorists anxious to promote their own theories.

The current taxonomy, released in 2002, is a modification of Gordon’s functional health patterns with 13 top-level domains and six classes. The entire taxonomy can be seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NANDA .  The 2012-2014 NANDA list of current diagnoses are available at http://www.nandanursingdiagnosislist.org/ along with the definition of a nursing diagnosis. Additionally a pdf file containing 16 new nursing diagnosis is available.

NANDA International, Inc. Is the organization that develops, researches, disseminates, and refines nursing diagnoses their criteria, and taxonomy. Since 2002they have published publish the International Journal of Nursing of Knowledge which consists of articles applying NANDA, the Nursing Interventions Classifications (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classifications (NOC) terminologies. They also sometimes contain articles about a combination of these three terminologies known colloquially as NNN.
