Interface or Reference Terminology

Some terminologies are used for clinical documentation, while others function as a background terminology, or one that takes terms from clinical documentation and behind the scenes maps them to a common concept to allow data aggregation when different terminologies are used. Mapping, as explained on page 290, often does not result in an exact match.

The diagram below is a simplified graphic intended to assist you in understanding the different functions of minimum data sets, interface and reference terminologies.
