Biomedical Informatics Insights 2009. You need to scroll down to see the abstract, then download the pdf file from the right column. Explores the need to help health information consumers to bridge the gap between access to information and information understanding—i.e. to help consumers understand health related web-based resources so that they can act upon it. Discusses the many issues involved.

The article explores access to and barriers to health information including healthcare providers and proposes that there be a new academic informatics discipline to explore the possibilities that are being created for consumers.

Stop Googling Your Symptoms. Posted Tuesday, August 07, 2007 8:15 AM by Noah Oppenheim. An interesting first person account that denigrates Internet searching for symptoms followed by postings from many whose searching proved life saving. Probably a little truth in what Mr. Oppenheim says, but then the evidence from the postings is interesting too. Keep in mind that those moved to post were upset with what he said. Those who agreed, or who had similar experiences may not have been moved to post.

This paper reports results of a systematic review of peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trials testing the efficacy of web-based health interventions published from 1996-2006. You may need to use Ctrl+ (that is hold down the Ctrl key and tap the plus key) to read this, because the print is very small. Worth while if considering using the Web to provide healthcare support or information.
