Chapter 13 Nursing Classification Systems

Since the book was printed, another standardized terminology has been recognized by the ANA Committee for Nursing Practice Information Infrastructure (CNPII). You will find information about this in Updates LOINC

Moving Toward International Standards in Primary Care Information: Clinical Vocabulary Conference Summary Report New Orleans, November 1995. Some excellent information. The chapter of the same name as the title presents findings from a research project comparing the various terminologies with their ability to capture the data in nursing and medical notes. Interestingly, even then SNOMED performed the best. In the chapter "Report on Consensus" the strengths and weaknesses in 1995 of the International Classification of Primary Care, Read Codes (In 2000 these were incorporated into SNOMED.), SNOMED and the Unified Medical Language Systems are examined. Although the comparisons are dated, the information on the critical elements in standards statements is still valid.
