Using the Outline/Bullets in Word 2003

On the Menu line click Format>Click Bullets and Numbers. On the window you have choices as you can see on the tabs. The bulleted is the default on the bulleted tab. Click on your choice and click "OK." Once you make your selection, see instructions below for how to proceed. |

Outline choice allows you to have of the illustrated choices.

One of the hassles of using the outline in Word is that it will not allow you to get back into the numbering system, once you have stopped it. For example, let's say that you have selected the second outline in the outline choices. You write the first header, then you write some text that is not in outline format. Now you are ready to enter text for the second header, but Word is not. There are two ways around this.
- Always create a point below where you are going to enter text. Then enter your text above this point after deleting the level indicator.
- When ready to enter another level indicator, on the menu line, click Format>Bullets and Numbers and click again on your choice, then ok.
o get around this I will enter something like "Junk" as the next point. Then when I am ready to resume using the outline feature, I replace that.
In Word you can sort of compress the outline, but along with seeing the text after each level indicator unfortunately, it also shows the first sentence or more of the text. To compress to this level, you must have the Outline tool bar visible (see below). If it is not there, on the menu line, click View>Outline.
