Creating and Using Outlines (automatic numbering) in Word Processors
Besides being useful when an outline, or numbered list is desired an outline format is an excellent way to introduce levels into a paper that you are writing. For numbered lists, when the outline feature is used, you can easily move, add, or delete items without having to renumber. For a discussion of this feature see pages 128-130 in the text.
There are a few principles that apply to outlining regardless of the word processor that you use. When different levels of outlining are used, a tap of the tab key, moves the point to a lower level. Tapping Shift+tab moves up one level. These key presses can be used any time on a list that has more than one level. They also can be used to move from cell to cell in a spreadsheet, on a form, or in a table.
For instructions on how to use this feature, select the appropriate word processor.
