Word Processing Definitions

Confusion can result when working with a word processor if one does not interpret words in the same way that the word processor does. Because of the way it operates, a word processor is more liberal in what it includes in its meanings than humans.

Definitions As Interpreted by Word Processors
Character Any character you can enter from the keyboard. Includes spaces, and symbols such as #, $ etc.
Word Any characters between two spaces.
Paragraph Anything between two hard returns, whether a character, a space or blank.
Cut To remove an item from where it is and place on the clipboard.
Hard Return A line that ends by tapping the Enter key. It insures that the text that follows it will always start on a new line.
Hard Page A page created by tapping Ctrl+Enter that will always be a new page no matter how much text above it is deleted or entered.

Hanging Paragraph

A paragraph in which the first line starts closer to the left margin than the rest of the lines in the paragraph. Used for references in an APA paper.
Attribute Features on an object that can be changed. In a word processor this includes changing the font of a character, color, or many other appearances.
Object Anything on a computer that can be manipulated. Objects can contain other objects, e.g. a character is an object, but a word is an object that contains the character. A sentences object contains the words etc.
