Word Processing Definitions
Confusion can result when working with a word processor if one does not interpret words in the same way that the word processor does. Because of the way it operates, a word processor is more liberal in what it includes in its meanings than humans.
Definitions As Interpreted by Word

| Character | Any character you can enter from the keyboard. Includes spaces, and symbols such as #, $ etc. |
| Word | Any characters between two spaces. |
| Paragraph | Anything between two hard returns, whether a character, a space or blank. |
| Cut | To remove an item from where it is and place on the clipboard. |
| Hard Return | A line that ends by tapping the Enter key. It insures that the text that follows it will always start on a new line. |
| Hard Page | A page created by tapping Ctrl+Enter that will always be a new page no matter how much text above it is deleted or entered. |
| A paragraph in which the first line starts closer to the left margin than the rest of the lines in the paragraph. Used for references in an APA paper. | |
| Attribute | Features on an object that can be changed. In a word processor this includes changing the font of a character, color, or many other appearances. |
| Object | Anything on a computer that can be manipulated. Objects can contain other objects, e.g. a character is an object, but a word is an object that contains the character. A sentences object contains the words etc. |
