Cookies

Cookies are simply a method for a website to send information to a user's browser and for the browser to return the state information to the original website. The state information can be used for authentication, identification of a user session, user's preferences, shopping cart contents, or anything else that can be accomplished through storing text data on the user's computer. Although they have received a bad name, most times they are a method of facilitating Web commerce, but they can be harmful.

Flash Cookies

"Flash cookies can occur when a Web site triggers a flash page, or animated sequence. They trace your movement and store a lot more information about you than normal cookies. A major disadvantage of flash cookies is that you can’t locate them in your browser. They are not shown in the list of cookies that you can see when you take a look at the cookies that are currently saved in your web browser." From
