October 2,2009 Comment from newsletter from Dr.David Blumenthal, Oct 2, 2009
By focusing on “meaningful use,” we recognize that better health care does not come solely from the adoption of technology itself, but through the exchange and use of health information to best inform clinical decisions at the point of care.  Meaningful use of EHRs, we anticipate, will also enable providers to reduce the amount of time spent on duplicative paperwork and gain more time to spend with their patients throughout the day.  It will lead us toward improvements and sustainability of our health care system that can only be attained with the help of a reliable and secure nationwide electronic health information system.

Corrections

Chapter 26, page 437. The Center for Nursing Advocacy, mentioned in Chapter 26 on page 437 was dissolved. It has been replaced by "The Truth About Nursing." at http://www.truthaboutnursing.org/

Chapter 14 "The Point" It has been brought to our attention that there is some confusion about the use of the term "electronic health record" in the "Point."  The accepted terminology is still electronic medical record (EMR) for an electronic record for just one agency (including all entities such as other hospitals, VNAs etc.) and electronic health record (EHR) for electronic records that are shared between agencies.  Other terminology, such as electronic patient record (EPR) is not accepted by the NAHIT (http://www.nahit.org/pandc/press/pr5_20_2008_1_33_49.asp). Using EPR, or confusing the EMR with the EHR, can only provide points of confusion for learners and others. The ultimate goal of the US government is that EMRs will morph to EHRs.

Chapter 8, page 138 States the often used precept that 50% of visuals are remembered. There are controversies about this. See Will at Work and decide for yourself. Learning is complicated.

Chapter 13, page 271. Although it was 1900 when the Bertillon Classification of Causes of Death was named the International Classification of Disease, it was 1893 when the International Statistical Institute accepted it. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICD and http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/International-Statistical-Classification-of-Diseases-and-Related-Health-Problems (Added June , 2009)

Chapter 16, page 275-276. Trying to keep track of the federal government changes is difficult. the final name agreed upon for the AHIC successor is the National eHealth Collaborative. However, a Web piece dated Feb 20, 2009, puts the fate of this organization in doubt. Will try to keep up to date on this topic.
